Coming Soon... Top 10 Ways To Totally Mess Up An AWR Analysis

After looking at something like a million AWR reports and talking with DBAs about them, I've noticed a pattern. Let's call this pattern the "how to" guide to completely make any AWR analysis totally meaningless and downright misleading. But in all seriousness, avoiding the problems on this list and transforming them into your advantage is a big deal. And, it will help make our AWR work stronger then ever before! I'm also looking forward to your favorite AWR gotchas!

Using ASH To Detect Parsing Issues Before It Becomes A Problem

Hard parsing is normal in Oracle databases. But if it gets too intense, significant performance problems will result. Interestingly, there is a way to use ASH to detect parsing issues BEFORE a time based analysis identifies a problem! How you can do this, including the backstory and the reliability of this method, is the focus of this webinar.

How To Deal With AWR/SP Report Analysis Challenges

Tuning Oracle systems using data from an AWR/Statspack report is powerful. But sometimes the analysis can be...well challenging. In this webinar I will discuss some of these challenges and how to deal with them. Some of the challenges addressed are; when DB CPU is suspect, when the top event is db file sequential reads but there is NOT an IO bottleneck and why multi-block and async read wait times can be much longer than single block reads. You will see all of these challenges come into play while I do an Oracle Time-Based Analysis from a single real-life production Statspack report.

Parsing 1: From SQL Text To SQL_ID To Diagnosing Performance Problems

When an application submits SQL or PLSQL to the database, before it can be executed, it must be parsed. So, parsing had better happen fast and consume minimal resources. Otherwise, there will likely be a lack of CPU resources, latching and mutex issues, out of shared pool errors or even an instance freeze. Our focus today is understanding Oracle's process architecture, parsing checks, general hashing, hashing that results in a SQL_ID and how to tell if "too many" SQL_IDs are causing performance issues.
